Inverter-based resource (IBR)

An inverter-based resource is a power source, such as solar, certain types of wind turbines, or battery storage, that connects to the grid through power electronics (an inverter or converter) rather than a directly spinning synchronous generator. As solar, wind, and storage make up a growing share of the generation mix, grid operators face new challenges because IBRs don't naturally provide the physical inertia that synchronous generators do, which affects how the grid responds to sudden disturbances.
