Renewable / variable generation integration
Variable generation refers to sources like solar and wind whose output changes based on weather and time of day rather than being controllable on demand. Integrating growing amounts of variable generation into the grid requires additional tools, such as battery storage, more flexible conventional generation, better forecasting, and wider transmission connections, to keep supply and demand balanced despite that variability.
