Safety Instrumented System (SIS)

A Safety Instrumented System is a control system that operates independently of the normal process control system, designed specifically to detect hazardous conditions and automatically bring a process to a safe state, for example an emergency shutdown system that closes valves and stops equipment if a dangerous pressure or temperature threshold is crossed. SIS requirements for the process industry are governed by IEC 61511.
