Joule

The joule is the base unit of energy in the International System of Units (SI), defined as the energy transferred when one newton of force acts over a distance of one meter. It's rarely used directly in everyday electricity discussions (which favor kilowatt-hours), but it's the underlying scientific unit that other energy units, including the watt-hour family, can be converted to and from.
