Cascading failure

A cascading failure occurs when the failure of one infrastructure component or system triggers failures in the systems that depend on it, which can in turn trigger further failures, amplifying a disruption well beyond its original scope. Interdependencies between sectors are what make cascading failures possible: a single substation failure can cascade into a wider blackout, and that blackout can then cascade into water-system, communications, and transportation disruptions.
