RTU (Remote Terminal Unit)

An RTU is a field device that collects data from sensors and equipment at a remote site (like a substation or pipeline segment) and communicates that data back to a central SCADA system, often over long distances via radio, cellular, or satellite links. RTUs are similar to PLCs in function but are typically used where equipment is geographically dispersed and communication reliability over distance matters more than complex on-site logic.
